READING & LANGUAGE ARTS
ELA Standards
Here are ALL of the Utah ELA standards written on 1/3 of a horizontal page. I use these to post as my objectives each day/week. I also use them to refer to the standard(s) we are working on for a particular lesson. It may seem like some are missing due to numbers being skipped, but those are places in the core that don't apply to that content area (RL 8) or aren't taught until a later grade (several Language standards).

Alphabet Letter Cards
The first set of cards is the upper and lowercase letter together on a half sheet of paper. The sets with just upper or just lowercase letters are a quarter of a page in size. All of them use the KG Blank Space Solid font.

Phonics Rules
Ever wonder how to explain to your student how to break up a multisyllabic word to sound it out? Or why a word is spelled a certain way? This compilation of syllable types and phonics rules may help! This is an invaluable teacher resource!

To know when to double the consonant at the end of a word, there has to be a short vowel followed by an s, l, f, or z all by itself. I tell my class that if one of those letters are all by itself at the end of a word, then it is too scared to be alone after the short vowel and needs to have a buddy. That is why the image is a ghost - those 4 letters are too afraid to be all by themselves at the end of a word if they follow a short vowel. If you add any other letter, it changes the word, so it has to be the same letter so that together they still make just the one sound.

Display this poster to help students know when to use c and when to use k in their writing.

Games
This is played like Go Fish. One card is a CVC short vowel word, and the matching card is a CVCe with the silent/bossy e at the end. (cap, cape; fin, fine) The cards are large - 1/4 of a page. Students can ask for the CVCe card or the CVC card that would match the one in their own hand.

These self checking matching puzzle cards match the two words to the contraction. You can extend it by having students use the contractions in sentences either orally with a partner or written.

Recording Sheet - Students record the two words and the compound word when they add them together.

This is a set of 4 flip charts for present and past tense verbs (regular and Irregular). Each chart has a present tense and a past tense page. Copy them back to back so it makes one page. Fold it in half vertically so the Present Tense verbs are on the outside and cut along each line to the middle at the fold. Students can then work in partners. One student reads the word, the other student states the past tense verb they think will be under the flap, then they can open the flap to check their answer. There is also a recording sheet so students can write and illustrate some of the present and past tense verbs they practice in the flip chart to demonstrate their understanding of how the words are different.

Listening Response
For listening center, I have my students record how much they liked the book and illustrate their favorite part of the story. Toward the end of the year, they listen to a chapter book. We do one chapter per day, then in the book log the student writes a one sentence summary of what happened in the chapter and illustrate the chapter at the bottom of the page. There is also a page to write the solution of the problem in the story and a page to record character, setting, and problem. The first page of the pdf is left intentionally blank as the back page when you copy it.

Tracking Minutes/ Rewards
I keep track of number of minutes students read at home. If they read a certain number of minutes each month, they get one of these bookmarks and a prize. They can see if they can collect the bookmarks for every month during the year. I copy them on various colors of cardstock and cut into tall quarters.
