PHONICS PRACTICE
HFW Phonics Decodable Stories: These stories are cheesy sometimes, but they are totally decodable and focus on the phonics skill from Wonders each week. We do not use the Wonders HFW (sight words) - we didn't like that many of the Wonders words were not true HFW and our district uses Fry Words. The HFW are the 100 Grade 1 Fry Words and another 50 which together comprise the 150 most written words. updated 1/30/2020 to fix a couple minor errors

Phonics Cut & Paste Sort: There is one page for each week of phonics instruction to match the Wonders scope and sequence. Students cut the cards at the bottom, sort them by sound/spelling, then glue them on the page.
Blending and Dictation cards: These are great! print, laminate, punch a hole in the corner and put on a ring. Contains words and sentences for blending as well as dictation words for each day of the unit. It breaks it down to a manageable amount of work for each day. Thanks to Barbara Taylor!

Templates: These powerpoints can be used to review letter names, sounds, sight words, and decodable words in whole or small group settings. They match the Blending and Dictation cards above done by Barb Taylor. Thanks Colleen Pieper!

Unit Game Cards: These words are all taken from the phonics blending portion to help students practice reading the sounds and words. The first page gives ideas of how to use the cards. There are cards to go with each week to focus on that week's phonics sound spelling. Updated 7/23/20

SOUND CARDS
Sound Card Larger Spellings - These go on top of the sound cards so students can actually see the spellings! Laminate them and stick them on top of the other sound box with glue dots. Now everyone can see all the spellings from across the room! Thanks to Barbara Taylor!
Sound Spelling Card - The first card uses the regular pictures. I thought they might print too dark or be hard to see, so card b changes the fire, hippo, koala, and volcano cards to similar pictures just without the background to help them print more clearly.
This is a NEW sound spelling card done by Barbara Taylor! It separates the digraphs, long vowels and blends. One version of the card has -ng while the other card has the spelling -ing. There is also a page called "My Mini Word Wall" that lists all the sight words from the program in alphabetical order. (There is another version of the sight words called "Personal Word Wall" done by Jamie Shaw that lists the words under each letter in the order the words are introduced so it looks more like my word wall. It's under the sight word tab. Whatever your personal preference is!)
Sound Spelling Flash Cards - Print these cards, cut apart, and put on a ring for students to practice their sounds and spellings. Students practice by saying the letter at the top, the name of the card, then the sound 3 times. (Example: M, map, /m/, /m/, /m/) Also includes a card with the alphabet and 5 cards with the start smart sight words. Thanks to Barbara Taylor!
Mini Sound Spelling Cards - These are smaller versions of the large cards. I use the little cards to post with my objectives. The poster cards are a little larger and will fit on a piece of butcher paper and laminated to make a class poster to use as an easy extra reference. Thanks Colleen Pieper!

Hand Signs for Sound Cards: The movements listed on the back of the Wonders cards often have nothing to do with the picture on the card. It was too confusing for students. We used the sign language for each letter and added a movement to it that would help students relate the sound to the card. I like to use it with the Spelling Sound Card (also on this page to download) as a chant each day to familiarize the students with the card as well as practice the sounds each day. It would sound like this for each letter: "A, /a/, apple." We say the letter, sound, and name of the card as we do the sign for that card. It's helped our low kids a LOT! If a student asks how to spell something, I can show them the sign without having to leave the student I'm already working with. We only have developed signs for the short vowels and rest of the alphabet. If anyone has ideas for the other cards, I'd LOVE to hear from you!!! The doc file is a written explanation of the signs, the powerpoint is one you can put up to practice with your students, and the video is our sound chant in action! Thanks to Jamie Shaw for the powerpoint!!

SPELLING
Spelling Lists: There is a page for each week divided into quarters. These can be used to be sent home or for students to keep at school to easily refer to during activities. Two of the lists I've changed - explanation is on the first page of the file.
Spelling Word Sorts: These are the completed sorts. Students sort spelling into 2 or 3 categories and add the two sight words at the bottom. Updated 2/20/17 I have discovered some other mistakes as I've used these this year. You are welcome to edit them. We no longer use the Wonders spelling. We are using the 35 most common word families for "Chunk Spelling" as explained by this blog link: https://www.secondstorywindow.net/2nd-grade-chunk-spelling/

ORGANIZATION
Wonders Daily Plans: These plans helped me figure out how Wonders works and how to help a substitute know what to do in my class. Obviously you'll need to edit them to fit what you do in your own class, but it might give you some ideas!

HANDWRITING
Handwriting Verbage: When all the same hand strokes have the same verbage, students know exactly what to do. This document gives you exactly what to say for each letter upper and lowercase to help your students improve their handwriting.
Handwriting ABC Book: This book includes upper and lowercase for each letter. Each page has the picture of the Wonders sound card and the verbage that goes along with it. Students are taken from guided to individual practice with each letter.
