GAMES AND ACTIVITIES FOR WONDERS SIGHT WORDS
Sight Word Slap: Each powerpoint slide is about 10 sight words from Wonders. To play, divide into 2 teams. Each team has a fly swatter. Show the slide you'd like to work on. Call out a word and the first team to slap it gets the point! The list number on the slides correlates with the "Sight Word Bubblegum Lists" we use (see below). Thanks to Jamie Shaw!

Sight Word Dice: Each student has a sheet. Roll a die. Whatever number is rolled is paired with a word on the sheet. Students say it, spell it, say it and write it in the next box up in the column. Students take turns writing or both can write each time someone rolls. The first word to be written all the way to the top of the page is the winner. Or play for black-out.

Sight Word Cards: Each card set is labeled in the corner with the unit and week number. (U1.4 is unit 1 week 4) Copy two sets and play the Go Fish game. You could also add one other card into the two sets and play Old Maid - they won't find out which mystery word is the Old Maid until they've found all the matches.
I also used these cards to put in a small pocket chart for my objectives and to place by my door so students practice reading the words each time they leave and enter the room. I have also put a word card in a lanyard nametag pocket and have today's helper (or a student struggling with that particular word) wear the word and "quiz" everyone throughout the day by having them read it. Sight Word Seek and Find: Students use a magnifying glass to find all of the words from that sight word list in the picture. As they find the words, they write the words on the lines at the bottom and can color the picture.
|
Sight Word Word Search: Find the words from each list in the puzzle.

Sight Word Bubblegum Lists
These sight word lists have been taken directly from the Wonders program. The first 3 lists are the words from Start Smart which are the same words they learn in Kindergarten. We have divided each set of lists into colors based on the Unit from which they come. As students pass off sight words, they are given a paper gumball matching the color of list they passed off to write their name on and add to the giant class gumball machine. One of our other teachers uses a rainbow rather than the gumball idea.
List 1 - 3 - Red - Start Smart
List 4 - 5 - Orange - Unit 1 List 6 - 8 - Yellow - Unit 2 List 9 - 11 - Green - Unit 3 List 12 - 14 - Blue - Unit 4 List 15 - 17 - Purple - Unit 5 List 18 - 20 - Pink - Unit 6

Print a check off sheet for each student to mark as you read with each student.
Print one of these and place in sheet protectors for the students to read from as they pass off lists.
Print and bind or staple at top to make into 1/4 page strip flip booklets to send home with students to practice. Each page has 4 of the same list for easy copying. (Updated 9/1/2017 - fixed a word missing on list 5)
This is the list I post online on my class website for parents to download. If they lose their list, I just direct them to the website to print another copy. It just has one copy of each list rather than 4 of each like the version above.
